Chichester High School and The E.Y.E Project invite the Primary feeder schools of Chichester High to an environmental learning event this Autumn. Pupils are able to join with other schools in the area to learn about environmental matters through fun and educational activities at the event.
We are pleased to announce that Eco-Schools England will be joining us for the day and will run a workshop and also organise a Skype call between all attending pupils and an Eco School from across the world.
Pupils will be able to attend 3 workshop sessions during the day and there will be stands that they can browse during the registration, break and lunch periods. We will celebrate the attending schools eco achievements and there will also be a charitable plastic milk bottle top collection at the event.
We are delighted to offer the following workshops sessions:
• Eco Schools England ‘Eco Schools and Beyond’ is a workshop looking at how pupils use water in school and at home and includes activities to show the volume of water used for simple tasks. This is then compared to how water is used in Eco-School countries from around the world.
• The Southern Co-operative ‘Explore the food on your doorstep’ will look at food miles and how far our food travels. The workshop will include map work, role play and the chance to try local produce.
• South Downs National Park Authority ‘Discover the Dark Side of the Downs’. In this workshop pupils will become dark skies mini-explorers finding out about the fantastic nocturnal wildlife that lives on the South Downs.
• Moving Sounds ‘Junk Percussion’. Through games and discussions this workshop will explore the importance of environmental issues for the future of our planet. Pupils will play all sorts of wonderful junk percussion instruments together, developing skills in playing rhythms and raising awareness of the possibility of reusing everyday objects in different creative ways.
• Goodwood Farm ‘Grass to Glass’ is a workshop on milk production looking at why milk is good for us, what is needed for milk production, and organic farming. Pupils will explore different types of milk by sampling whole and semi, learn about the process of cheese making with samples of whey and Goodwood cheese, and will use cream to make and taste butter.
• WWT Arundel ‘When the Rain Comes Down’ looks at wetlands, habitat loss, and how climate change effects biodiversity. The workshop will explore the use of natural and manmade materials and pupils will challenge themselves and work as part of a team to create the best habitat.
• West Sussex Waste Prevention Team ‘Waste, West Sussex and the World’. In this workshop pupils will consider a mixed bag of waste, discussing the items and how best to reduce damage to the environment and how to make best use of materials. Pupils will learn about the journey of household waste collected in West Sussex.
• Weald & Downland Open Air Museum ‘Recyclable clothing – what the past can teach us’ will focus on what we can we learn from the past about how people wasted less of their clothing. Pupils will be involved in a discussion about clothing, materials and production, and have a go at techniques used in the past such as carding and finger spinning. Using the knowledge gained in the session pupils will produce a mind map or display poster on ways in which we can reduce clothing waste.
• Chichester High School We are also delighted to advise that Chichester High school staff will be offering two workshops. Full details of these will follow when workshop selection forms are sent out but there will be a renewable energy workshop which will be a practical and hands on workshop looking at wind turbines and solar cells, and an environmental art workshop.
Initially places will be limited to 10 per school however it is possible that larger groups can be accommodated and requests for additional places will be considered if sufficient staff supervision can be provided to enable us to split the group.
A detailed invitation has now been sent out to all relevant schools who are invited to reserve their places now.
